University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Cluj-Napoca/ RO
The university was founded in 1868. The overall number of students enrolled in 1999/2000 was 2827 students, out of whom 2430 in undergraduate programmes, 103 in postgraduate programmes and 294 doctoral students. There are 450 members on the teaching staff, 120 on technical/administrative personnel, 181 persons in supporting services.
The 'Institute of Agronomic Teaching' Cluj was founded in 1869 on the Manastur domains, known half a millennium ago as a center for agricultural progress in Transylvania and contributing to the ennoblement of the Romanian land and to the enlightenment of the ploughmen on this side of the Carpathians. The duration of studies was of 3 years, the graduates being awarded the title of 'Certificated Agronomist '. The initial agronomic profile was extended to other specializations, such as Animal Breeding, Horticulture and Veterinary Medicine until 1978. From 1978 to 1989 the University was first organized in 2 and then in 4 faculties: Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Breeding and Veterinary Medicine. In 1990, the name was changed to 'University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine', in short, USAMV.
Throughout its history, masters and disciples of this School have managed to boost the national authority of this university, nowadays USAMV Cluj-Napoca being considered one of the most reputed universities of Romania in the field. At present, USAMV has more than 25 national partners (universities or research institutes) and collaborates with more than 15 international universities in the European Community, Europe, USA and Canada. The new curriculum and the strategy of the university have been elaborated in this spirit. Always the concept of ecological agriculture and permanent renewal and modernization of didactical activity and scientific areas is foreseen. The only State University of this profile in the northwestern area of the country, albeit it mostly caters to the needs of the Transylvanian jobs market, the USAMV is also engaged in training students from abroad, in excellent conditions. The University offers an excellent range of opportunities at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Students are selected on the basis of entrance examinations and can compete simultaneously for admission in two programmes.
Undergraduate ProgrammesWe offer competent training through the two types of undergraduate programmes: the long-track (five or six years, full-time) in our 4 Faculties, providing 9 specialties; the short-track (three years, full-time) in the 3 colleges, offering 7 college degrees.
Postgraduate Programmes The University provides highly qualified students with the opportunity for advanced study in 6 one-year advanced studies programmes and 30 doctoral degree programmes.
